Clinical Counselling addresses wellness, relationships, personal growth, career development, mental health, and psychological illness or distress.

You do not have to have a “serious problem” to benefit from the services of a Registered Clinical Counsellor. Many people get stuck from time to time and need a place of understanding and clarity. Problems can become confusing especially if they have been around for a long time or if there are other surrounding circumstances. Clinical Counsellors in Vancouver must be certified by the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC).  They are experts on how change occurs and they are skilled at helping move you on to new possibilities much more quickly than you might be able to achieve on your own.

Is Counselling For Me?

Some people who have never had counselling wonder what counselling can do for them.   People come to counselling for a variety of reasons.  Many hope to resolve problems they are having in their life circumstances or relationships.  Others want to heal from a trauma or overcome troublesome behavioural patterns.  Some need support and guidance to help them cope with a difficult transition such as loss or a change in family structure.  Still others desire to gain clarity in decision-making, or to find greater life satisfaction.

Some people feel frustrated or ashamed that they are still stuck with the “same old problems” even after a very long time.  Others feel surprised and overwhelmed by an unexpected turn of events.  In either case, many may find it difficult to take this first step of finding a counsellor.  Rest assured that it is normal to feel this way, and know that seeking help when you realize you need it is a sign of resilience, is evidence of self-awareness and good coping skills, and shows you are willing to accept responsibility to change.  People asking for help are not “weak” or “pathological;” they are normal people who are struggling with life circumstances, or who want to enhance their lives with the hopes of finding more meaning and fulfillment.

Most people seeking counselling believe they have exhausted their resources: Self-help books, past coping techniques, and friends or family are no longer helpful.  A counsellor provides an objective stance, a fresh perspective, and a confidential, safe space in which you will be deeply heard and supported, enabling you to explore issues that may cause you emotional pain.  Working with a therapist can help you gain insight and learn new strategies for dealing with life’s challenges.

When Should You Seek Counselling?

From childhood through late adulthood, there are certain times when we may need help addressing problems and issues that cause us emotional distress or make us feel overwhelmed. When you are experiencing these types of difficulties, you may benefit from the assistance of an experienced, trained professional. Professional counselors offer the caring, expert assistance that we often need during these stressful times. A counselor can help you identify your problems and assist you in finding the best ways to cope with the situation by changing behaviors that contribute to the problem or by finding constructive ways to deal with a situation that is beyond your personal control.

How Many Counselling Sessions Are Recommended?

In ideal circumstances counseling is terminated when the problem that you pursued counseling for becomes more manageable or is resolved. For some people, a few counseling sessions may be sufficient and for others, several (long term) sessions may be necessary. For treatment to be completed, a number of sessions may also depend on the therapeutic approach-modality used in the sessions. However, some insurance companies may limit the number of sessions for which they pay for. You should check with your medical health plan to find out more about any limitations in your coverage. During the first few counseling sessions, your counselor should also discuss the length of treatment that may be needed to achieve your goals.

How Will You Know That Counselling Is Working For You?

Counseling can help you maximize your potential and make positive changes in your life.

Together you and your counselor will set goals, you will work toward achieving them, and you and your counselor will assess how well you are actually meeting them. A good counselor will make ongoing assessments and recommendations and they will ask you for feedback. Changes are not always so obvious, some are more clearly measured and others are more saddled and harder to notice. Please don’t forget that counseling may be hard work at times but change and progress do happen.
